in Mid-Century Modern Period, 1945-1970, 1 Herald Plaza, Knight Ridder, KRI, Miami, Miami Herald Building, Mimo

By Becky Roper Matkov

The City of Miami's Historic and Environmental Preservation Board will vote on the historic designation of the One Herald Plaza Building MONDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2012 at 9:00 A.M., at Miami City Hall, 3500 Pan American Drive, Coconut Grove, Fla.

TESTIMONIALS FAVORING HISTORIC STATUS

  • "For all its cultural, architectural and historic significance, the Miami Herald Building is undeniably worthy of historic designation." — Support letter from Florida Trust for Historic Preservation (PDF)
  • "It would simply be a shame to destroy what is certainly one of the largest and most socially relevant examples of that era in architecture." — Support letter from Greater Miami Urban Environment League (PDF)
  • "The Miami Herald Building is a critical part of the city’s history and is an important architectural design from the period, embodying distinctive themes and unique features that speak to the character of Miami in the mid twentieth century." — Support letter from Christine Madrid-French (PDF)
  • "This letter is to strongly and unequivocally support the designation of the Miami Herald Building, 1 Herald Plaza, Miami, as a historic resource. " — Support letter from Gordon Loader (PDF)
  • "Opponents to designation also describe the Miami Herald as a “working building.” This does not mean the building is unworthy of landmark status. On the contrary, industrial-type buildings can also be significant and worthy of preservation " — Support letter from Marty Hylton (Doc)
  • "The Knights’ choice of a Modernist Chicago firm signified that Miami had “arrived” on the national scene. The firm of Naess and Murphy had a significant role nationally as well as in its hometown of Chicago." — Support letter from Steven Avdakov (PDF)
