S & S Diner

1757 NE 2nd Avenue
Year Built: 1938

Although this small building is only 12 feet wide, its classic Art Deco design illustrates the architectural trends and prevalent materials of the Depression era. Multi-colored structural glass is arranged in a series of horizontal and vertical bands on the building’s facade. This type of small neighborhood restaurant was popular throughout the United States in the 1930s, but most have since disappeared. The S & S Restaurant was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1989, and locally designated in 2003. Currently, the restaurant is closed, vacant and the building has severely deteriorated.
