Jeff Ransom, the Chief Archaeologist at the Miami-Dade County Office of Historic Preservation, received the Arva Award for Preservation Excellence. With a master’s degree in Archaeology and Heritage from the University of Leicester, UK, Jeff has been a pivotal figure in preserving Miami-Dade County’s archaeological treasures since 2006. His journey began as a cave archaeologist in Belize and Guatemala before transitioning to South Florida, where he has played significant roles in excavating sites such as the Miami Circle and those along the Miami River. Throughout his tenure, Jeff has overseen the management of more than 400 archaeological resources, including 47 locally designated archaeological zones, ensuring that Miami’s rich history remain intact for future generations.
