In September of 2018, Kathy and Chris Marlin came across an advertisement in the Miami Herald from the children of the son of the late Dr. Arthur and Ruth Sokoloff, who had lived in the 717 North Greenway Drive home since the 1950s until their respective deaths in 2017 and 2011. The advertisement was meant to reach the right buyer for the home – a family who would love and cherish it as much as the Sokoloffs. The Marlins, architect Luis Jauregui, and contractor FXD Construction were determined to preserve the home’s original details while stripping it of some clunky additions from the 1960s and 1970s. Finalizing architectural plans took nearly a year, including several trips before the Coral Gables Board of Architects and the city’s Historic Preservation Board. Final permitting and construction took another three years, delayed by detailed restoration work and labor issues during the Covid pandemic. All work was done following the best practices of the Secretary of the Interior’s Standard for the Treatment of Historic Properties. The result is nothing short of spectacular, and the Marlins moved into 717 North Greenway in December 2022.
