Dr. Enid Pinkney, a Miami pioneer, bids adieu

Dr. Enid Pinkney, a Miami trailblazer recognized far and wide, died in July at the age of 92. A beloved community icon born in Overtown of Bahamian heritage, Pinkney was active in the community until the very end. Shortly after her passing, friends, family, elected officials, local leaders, Black elders and others came together for a three-day celebration of the great historian’s life.

As the first Black president of the Dade Heritage Trust and Natives of Dade, Pinkney championed the protection of landmarks such as the Miami Circle and Virginia Key’s historic “colored” beach. In 2023, at the age of 91, she fought against Hialeah’s proposed annexation of Brownsville.

Recently, in November, Pinkney was honored with a street designation in her name, located just near the Historic Hampton House, the restoration of which she spearheaded.
